Two cross sections of a typical stream channel. The top cross section is a reference reach showing the 100 year flood stage the bankfull stage the low flow channel and the thalweg with the bankfull width. The bottom panel shows a culvert with the geomorphic channel reconstructed inside the culvert. The culvert is wider than the bankfull width channel and has stream banks inside. The low flow channel and thalweg are constructed inside the culvert. The 100-year flood stage and bank full stage are inside the culvert and there is headroom for debris to pass above the 100-year flood stage.
